poem for a woman in a Melbourne bookshop...

otherwise entitled...
"Too Many Women In This World Named Jess."

Jess:
I do confess

that every day
my sight gets
(well)

less & less.

And as I
lose sight of the shore,
lose sight
of the sand;

maybe
it is just a trick of the sunlight,

a sleight of hand??

and if this darkness
sneaks (completely) in
tonight:

i'll think again
of your smile

and be
bathed

in lignt.

***

(Just for the record,
in case you've now forgotten:
A smile
out-trumps a
tattooed line of a dead American poet
on someone's back
every time...

Well,
your smile.)

"O see the darkness yielding / That tore the light apart
Come healing of the reason / Come healing of the heart."
